Clarisonic Reviews - Acne

For a quick review of what you really want to know:
Does it work? Yes
Does it irritate? No.
Is it better than other brushes and worth the extra money? Yes.
I love my Clarisonic!

...now on to a more detailed review.

Clarisonic Exfoliation and Acne

I've always been a fan of exfoliation - scrubs, peels, etc. I love the clean feeling and smooth surface of my skin after a good scrub (even if it's just from my towel when I'm drying off). For most of my life, I have struggled with acne - which means that sometimes my skin thanks me for a good scrub and sometimes it screams at me as it gets inflamed. It's not easy to balance good exfoliation with low irritation, but Clarisonic does it perfectly!

I'll admit, when you're used to a more aggressive scrub, the first couple of uses of the Clarisonic can feel like it's not quite doing the job. Give it a few times, however, and you'll be feeling like someone just did a buff 'n shine on your face.

After using the Clarisonic Cleansing System for a while, here are some things I noticed:

  • Smoother skin
  • Smaller pores
  • Less redness and irritation
  • Skin tightening
  • Healthier glow
  • Less breakouts of acne

Clarisonic vs. Olay Pro-X Cleansing Brush

Before I invested in my Clarisonic, I wanted to be sure that I would actually use the brush every day and not quickly give up the ritual to skip back to my previous exfoliation methods. So, I started with a much cheaper, simple electronic Olay Pro-X Cleansing Brush. I stayed dedicated to using it, and it worked fine, but I wasn't getting the same results that everyone who used a Clarisonic swore to. Deciding that I would stay consistent, and very interested in achieving the results others talked about, I invested in the Clarisonic.

First, I must tell you that they are truly two different products. Though the Olay Pro-X Cleansing Brush works well for basic exfoliation, the Clarisonic Cleansing System uses ultrasonic cleansing (like the Sonicare toothbrush used for deep cleaning your teeth), which utilizes sound vibration to gently and deeply clean pores. Sonication (the mechanism used in ultrasonic cleansing) is used for delicate processes like cleaning jewelry and extracting microfossils from rock (which obviously requires thorough yet gentle care). As this method is obviously prized for it's ability to deeply clean while remaining gentle, it makes perfect sense to apply its uses to skin care. So, where the ultrasonic cleansing of the Clarisonic gently oscillates at 300 times per second, the Olay Pro-X simply spins the brush in a circle (which wears out the brush quickly and can cause irritation).

Clarisonic Video: How It Works

Here's a video with a lot of great information about how it works, how to use it, and some medical opinions about it. The video is a bit older and doesn't show the more convenient and updated Clarisonic models available, but the overall information is the same, and it's the most thorough video that I've found.

  • Men interested in how it helps prevent razor burn and ingrown hairs, check the video out at 2:29.
  • To understand the specifics of ultrasonic cleansing, check the video out at 2:52.

Clarisonic for Skin Tightening

Ultrasonic devices are also used for skin tightening (we'll explore this in another post). Though I'm sure its not as drastic as what I would see from a unit specifically designed for skin tightening, I have personally seen my skin getting tighter just from using my Clarisonic.

Healthy Essentials: Green Vibrance

Green Vibrance by Vibrant Health - 60 serving containerWe all know that greens are good for us - to eat, juice, take intravenously - ok, that last one is taking it a bit far, but you get the idea. Greens are good for you. You need them, so get them.

One of the powerhouse ways that I like to get my greens (& soooo many other healthy essentials, like enzymes, probiotics, liver support, etc.) is with Green Vibrance from Vibrant Health.

Get Your DAILY Greens

Some people juice their greens or take a green powder because they have a true aversion to eating their green vegetables. That's not me. Broccoli is my favorite vegetable - I don't only crave it, I get excited about eating it just like I get excited about eating brownies. I know this is only one of the many ways that I am not normal, but I'm comfortable with that. At least this is one of those areas where my "lack of normal" is exceptionally helpful to me and my health. Still, with my love of broccoli, kale, spinach, collards, and so many other wonderfully green foods - I know that it's hard to get a truly amazing dose of the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that these greens pack in every single day. That's one of the reasons that Green Vibrance is on my Healthy Essentials list.

What Are The Best Greens To Get And Why?

Gross Food Face - woman with red hair, green shirt.I've tried many greens throughout the years. I've had barely-there greens, swampy-slime greens, "are-you-sure-this-is-green??" greens...you get the idea. I've found greens that were disgusting, but since they were packed with good nutrients, I suffered through them. ("Bitter-beer face" has nothing on my "Oh my word, what was that!?!" greens face.) I've had greens that tasted good, but found that I was paying too much for them. Why? Simple - the lighter taste came with lighter nutrients (fillers made them more palatable and took the space of the nutrients I was trying to get).

I have found a few greens that fit the requirements of being nutrient dense while still having decent flavor. My favorite of all of these greens is Green Vibrance, and here's some of the reasons why:

(Click one of the links above to take you directly to that reason why I choose Green Vibrance.)

Cost of Greens (Relatively)

A Little Over $1 A Day

Before we go into detail of each of the above reasons I take Green Vibrance over any other green, let's deal with the expense. I get a 60 serving container of Green Vibrance from iHerb for around $68 (depends on discount). First, for those looking to try it and are new to iHerb, you can get a $10 discount off of your first order of $40 or more by following this iHerb link or putting in the code tas065 when you order. Next, let's look at why $68 is actually a great deal.

That's a little over $1 a day. A head of lettuce costs about $1 a day and has a great deal less nutrients, but there's more...keep reading.

Saving On Products It Replaces

It replaces other products for me: Food-Based Multi-Vitamin, Probiotics, Prebiotics and More (see More Than Just Greens below for more details). That's a huge reduction in overall cost. Getting more products from one source saves money. If you're looking into greens, then you care about your health. A good food-based multi-vitamin and probiotics are central to your health. Green Vibrance covers those needs as well as many other supplements you may or may not already be taking, but could certainly benefit from.

Coffee vs. Greens - Choices: It's that simple

Where Else Are You Spending It?

Cup of coffee - It's an example that we've all heard or seen applied many times to other things. I hate to be cliché, but it's still true, so it bears pointing out. If you're willing to pay $1 for a cup of coffee (or a snack), shouldn't you be willing to pay around $1 for your health? It really is that simple.

You Genuinely Don't Have The Money

I've had friends that genuinely didn't have the money to pay $1 a day (especially per person when looking to the health of their family). I understood then and I understand now, if that's your situation. I'll tell you what I told her: Buy it and take 1/2 a dose. 1/2 of the serving is still going to do a great deal more for your health than any other product. 1/2 of a nutrient-dense, multi-health formula is still going to do wonders for you and your family. Just because you can't do everything, doesn't mean you can't do anything - remember that!

Just because you can't do everything, doesn't mean you can't do anything -
Remember that!Natasha Renée Hayes

Green Vibrance: Mix of Greens (get a mix of greens in one place)

One of the reasons that I like taking Green Vibrance vs. juicing my greens or taking a simple powdered spirulina is the mix of greens. We all know that different foods have different amounts and spectrums of nutrients. We understand that though a carrot and a clementine are both orange, they're not made up of the same stuff. Sure, they might have some of the same nutrients, but not all of them. This is no difference when looking at sources of greens. That's why I like to mix it up.

Mix your greens with Green Vibrance: spirulina, wheat grass, oat grass, barley grass, kelp, spinach and more.

Green Vibrance takes a collection of greens from different sources (land and sea) and puts them together into one product:

  • Certified organic Barley grass juice powder
  • Certified organic Oat grass juice powder
  • Certified organic Kamut grass juice powder
  • Certified organic Wheat grass juice powder
  • Certified organic Spirulina powder
  • Chlorella (pharmaceutical grade)
  • Certified organic Parsley
  • Certified organic Spinach
  • Certified organic Alfalfa sprout powder
  • Certified organic Broccoli sprout powder
  • Freeze dried Green Bean powder
  • Freeze dried Zucchini powder
  • Certified organic Kelp (sea vegetable)
  • Certified organic Rockweed (sea vegetable)
  • Certified organic Alaria (sea vegetable)

Green Vibrance: More Than Just Greens

I'm always interested in getting more of my needs met in one place - especially when it comes to purchasing products. (I like clothes that can be dressed up or down, a purse that doubles as a briefcase, a cake plate that becomes a punch bowl - Multi-purpose, baby - that's what I like!) Multi-purpose makes things easier to buy, store and travel with, and it usually saves money. All of those apply with Green Vibrance.

Greens Plus Probiotics, Vitamins, Enzymes, Liver Support, Antioxidants and More: Green Vibrance Review at Younger-Body.comGreen Vibrance has more than just greens. It also has:

(Click one of the links above to take you directly to that added nutrient in Green Vibrance.)

Greens Plus Multi-Vitamin Replacement

The first time-saver, money saver and storage saver that Green Vibrance gives me is the multi-vitamin. First, please know that all multi-vitamins are not created equal - it all depends on the source of the vitamins. That's why I always get my vitamins sourced from natural foods.

If you're looking for a multi-vitamin, I can strongly suggest Garden of Life's Raw One Multi-Vitamin for Women, or Garden of Life's Raw One Multi-Vitamin for Men. These are the multi-vitamins we used to take (and still do, depending on our current nutrition, travel and lifestyle needs). When we're at home, or traveling to stay somewhere for an extended period of time, we use the Green Vibrance instead. It gives us all of the vitamins we were getting in the Raw One Multi, with the exception of some B-Vitamins. To make up for this lack, we find it easiest to simply supplement with a good B-Complex. You can get one here.

Feel free to follow this link and compare the breakdown of vitamins for yourself. The breakdown of vitamins in Green Vibrance is below:

  • Vitamin A from beta carotene (4,764 IU)
  • Vitamin C (45.5 mg)

Taste of Greens

If it's disgusting, you're not going to keep drinking it. Taste is important. Green Vibrance is that it doesn't have any off-putting tastes. There's nothing that stands out and it doesn't taste like swamp water (though it does look like it).

Sweet or Salty?

Taste is about more than palatability - it also has to do with flavor. I've had greens that tasted fine because they added stevia, so they were a little sweet. This is great, if you like sweet. If you don't? Good luck.

One of my reader's pointed out that she gets really tired of sweet things and would love to have her greens salty. That's one of the things that I like about Green Vibrance (other than the no disgusting flavors) - they don't add any sweeteners. That gives me control of flavors. If I want it sweet, I add a scoop of Stevia or mix it with a chilled juice or herbal tea. (Yes - it tastes better cold.) If I want it salty, I add salt, maybe even garlic or mix it with a Raw Gazpacho Juice Recipe, or chilled broth. The point is, you control the flavor. Sweet or Salty? Your choice.

Greens: Easy Mixing

Vitamin Shoppe Shaker Bottle

If you've ever had the experience of chewing the chunks in your greens or getting a burst of powder that didn't get blended, you appreciate the importance of a green that mixes well.

I find it easiest to have my greens "shaken, not stirred".  To accomplish that, I use this simple little shaker cup I picked up from Vitamin Shoppe. If you have trouble finding one (I can't find them online), here are a few more options you could pick from. Just click on the image, and it'll take you to it on Amazon.

I particularly like BlenderBottle GoStak Twist n' Lock Storage Jars. You can take your greens and a few servings of protein all to be used in the same bottle! (I told you I like multi-purpose.) For the moms and dads out there, you could even use a sippy cup. Just make sure to take out the filter first, put a finger over the sipping area and wash when done. I certainly don't want to get any of you into trouble with this suggestion. Hey, it's all about using what you have (again with the multi-purpose!).

What About You?

Featured Foods: Stevia

In looking to low-carb diets, sugar-free foods or simply keeping the calories low, stevia is a must have. I love it and I use it everyday.

You've heard the expression:

A moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips.

Well, my sweet-tooth and I have this battle, but Stevia is my secret weapon. I can satisfy my sweet tooth and my mirror at the same time.

Now, I'm a foodie, so I'm picky about my ingredients. Though I enjoy the experience of varying diets, I'm not one of those who thinks that tofurky (fake turkey made of tofu) actually tastes like meat, or that the food dehydrated raw pizza tastes like the one fresh out of a wood-fire oven. I can appreciate rice, almond or soy milk for their individual flavors, but you'll never see me acting like it tastes like milk. So, when I talk about stevia being my secret weapon, it's not with sacrifice to flavor or enjoyment of my food. I find the times it works and don't use it when it doesn't.

When substituting anything in an existing well-loved recipe, you get one of the following:

  1. It's disgusting - It completely destroyed everything that you once loved about the dish and you wonder why anyone would defile it so.
  2. It gets the job done - It's not exactly the same, but the differences are subtle and you find yourself satisfied with the outcome.
  3. It's different, but good - It changed the dish enough to be considered a new recipe and you're glad to be able to open up your repertoire.
  4. It's just right - It's like you never changed anything. Everything you loved and craved about the original recipe is intact and you pat yourself on the back for finding a way to sneak healthier food into your family and yourself.
  5. It's better - You had no idea that perfection could be improved upon, but you are delighted that you took on the task of experimentation and discovered pure bliss.

So, which one will stevia be? All of them - truly! It all depends on the brand of stevia and the recipe. I've had all of these experiences already and I still feel like I've only just begun experimenting with what I can make. Don't get too discouraged though; you don't have to do all of these experiments yourself. I'll give you some of mine and add the successes to the yb-recipes section. Please, share your personal experiences and favorite recipes in the comments below, so we can all learn together. Then bookmark this page for future reference.

Stevia plant rowsWhat Is Stevia?

Stevia is a natural sweetener and sugar substitute extracted from the leaves of the plant species native to South America (Genus Stevia, especially S. rebaudiana, native to Paraguay). Stevia is about 100 to 300 times sweeter than sugar, but has no carbohydrates, calories, or artificial ingredients.

Why Should I Care About Stevia?

Stevia is a sugar alternative. There are many compelling reasons to reduce your daily intake of sugar - particularly added sugar. Here are a few:

“Excess sugar is linked to changes in metabolism, increased blood pressure, liver damage and interference with hormone signaling. Lustig and colleagues argue that many of the health effects caused by drinking too much alcohol are, in fact, also caused by eating too much sugar.” CNCA Health - The Dangers of Sugar: Is It Really That Bad?

You can check out more research here.

Obviously too much sugar is a bad thing. Stevia helps keep you from eating too much sugar…without sacrificing the sweets.

Things You Should Know About Stevia

Like all sugar substitutes, stevia has a stronger sweetness per volume than sugar, and it still has a mild aftertaste (depending on how much you use and what brand you use). Unlike other sugar substitutes, stevia is all-natural, and has no negative side effects.

My Favorite Brands of Stevia

The two best brands of stevia are Kal Pure Organic Stevia and Now Better Stevia Powder. They have the least aftertaste of any other brands we've tried (and we've tried a lot).

Kal Pure Organic Stevia ExtractKal Pure Organic Stevia

Kal Pure Organic Stevia was is still our top choice for most recipes. Of all other brands (that don't include fillers), this is the one with the least aftertaste and most sweetness. That means that a little bit goes a long way, so the investment really pays off. Because it is so sweet, however, some find it difficult to get a small enough serving for things that require a much smaller serving size, like sweetening individual drinks.

1/2 TEASPOON of Kal Organic Stevia is the equivalent of one CUP of sugar.

Now Better Stevia Powder

Now Better Stevia

Now Better Stevia Powder is distinctly better than its liquid form. We'v found the liquid to have quite an aftertaste, so don't discount the powder if you've had a negative experience with the liquid. (Again, some people don't mind the aftertaste of other stevias or even artificial sweeteners. If that's you, then enjoy the convenience and variety of flavor options with the liquids.)

Now Better Stevia Powder is not quite as sweet as other brands, which makes it much easier for measuring out the small amounts you'll need when working with something that's so much sweeter than sugar.

1 TEASPOON of Now Better Stevia Powder is the equivalent of one CUP of sugar.

Imaging how little you need to add to a drink. One cup is 16 tablespoons (48 teaspoons). If you like a tablespoon of sugar in your drink, then you'd only use 1/16th of a teaspoon of Now Better Stevia.

Tips For Using Stevia

Let's talk about when stevia works and when it doesn't. Truly, everyone will have to form his or her own opinions on this, but there are a few factors that help you decide:

  • Already using a sugar substitute? This healthy switch will be easy.
  • Sensitive to certain flavors (like me)? You'll find some limitations.

I don't like it in my coffee or black tea, but I can always use it in baking, smoothies, and fruity herbal teas.

Baking, baking, baking - One of the best places to use stevia, without having to worry about any added flavors, is in baking.

The absolute best tip I have for you is this:

Cut it in half - 1/2 Stevia & 1/2 sugar

If the flavor of the Stevia is too strong, a simple use 1/2 Stevia & 1/2 sugar/honey/maple syrup (or even 1/4 stevia & 3/4 sugar - transition it in until you find the right blend). This will work best for keeping the desired taste while still cutting the sugar in your diet.

Note: This doesn't mean _ of the same amount of Stevia, but instead cutting out _ the other sweetener and adding the equivalent sweetness in stevia. Again:

1 TEASPOON of Now Better Stevia Powder is the equivalent of one CUP of sugar.

1/2 TEASPOON of Kal Pure Organic Stevia is the equivalent of one CUP of sugar.

So, if a recipe calls for 3 cups of sugar, simply put in 1.5 cups of sugar and either 1.5 teaspoons of Now Better Stevia Powder or 0.75 teaspoons of Kal Pure Organic Stevia, and you'll have cut the sugar in half without missing out on the sweetness.

Each brand has its own sugar-to-stevia ratio, so check the package of the stevia you've purchased before you measure out sweetener. Still, the above ratios should give you a good starting place. Also, the scoop that is inside of these stevia containers is roughly 1/32 of a teaspoon.
