Clarisonic Reviews - Acne

For a quick review of what you really want to know:
Does it work? Yes
Does it irritate? No.
Is it better than other brushes and worth the extra money? Yes.
I love my Clarisonic!

...now on to a more detailed review.

Clarisonic Exfoliation and Acne

I've always been a fan of exfoliation - scrubs, peels, etc. I love the clean feeling and smooth surface of my skin after a good scrub (even if it's just from my towel when I'm drying off). For most of my life, I have struggled with acne - which means that sometimes my skin thanks me for a good scrub and sometimes it screams at me as it gets inflamed. It's not easy to balance good exfoliation with low irritation, but Clarisonic does it perfectly!

I'll admit, when you're used to a more aggressive scrub, the first couple of uses of the Clarisonic can feel like it's not quite doing the job. Give it a few times, however, and you'll be feeling like someone just did a buff 'n shine on your face.

After using the Clarisonic Cleansing System for a while, here are some things I noticed:

  • Smoother skin
  • Smaller pores
  • Less redness and irritation
  • Skin tightening
  • Healthier glow
  • Less breakouts of acne

Clarisonic vs. Olay Pro-X Cleansing Brush

Before I invested in my Clarisonic, I wanted to be sure that I would actually use the brush every day and not quickly give up the ritual to skip back to my previous exfoliation methods. So, I started with a much cheaper, simple electronic Olay Pro-X Cleansing Brush. I stayed dedicated to using it, and it worked fine, but I wasn't getting the same results that everyone who used a Clarisonic swore to. Deciding that I would stay consistent, and very interested in achieving the results others talked about, I invested in the Clarisonic.

First, I must tell you that they are truly two different products. Though the Olay Pro-X Cleansing Brush works well for basic exfoliation, the Clarisonic Cleansing System uses ultrasonic cleansing (like the Sonicare toothbrush used for deep cleaning your teeth), which utilizes sound vibration to gently and deeply clean pores. Sonication (the mechanism used in ultrasonic cleansing) is used for delicate processes like cleaning jewelry and extracting microfossils from rock (which obviously requires thorough yet gentle care). As this method is obviously prized for it's ability to deeply clean while remaining gentle, it makes perfect sense to apply its uses to skin care. So, where the ultrasonic cleansing of the Clarisonic gently oscillates at 300 times per second, the Olay Pro-X simply spins the brush in a circle (which wears out the brush quickly and can cause irritation).

Clarisonic Video: How It Works

Here's a video with a lot of great information about how it works, how to use it, and some medical opinions about it. The video is a bit older and doesn't show the more convenient and updated Clarisonic models available, but the overall information is the same, and it's the most thorough video that I've found.

  • Men interested in how it helps prevent razor burn and ingrown hairs, check the video out at 2:29.
  • To understand the specifics of ultrasonic cleansing, check the video out at 2:52.

Clarisonic for Skin Tightening

Ultrasonic devices are also used for skin tightening (we'll explore this in another post). Though I'm sure its not as drastic as what I would see from a unit specifically designed for skin tightening, I have personally seen my skin getting tighter just from using my Clarisonic.

Healthy Essentials: Green Vibrance

Green Vibrance by Vibrant Health - 60 serving containerWe all know that greens are good for us - to eat, juice, take intravenously - ok, that last one is taking it a bit far, but you get the idea. Greens are good for you. You need them, so get them.

One of the powerhouse ways that I like to get my greens (& soooo many other healthy essentials, like enzymes, probiotics, liver support, etc.) is with Green Vibrance from Vibrant Health.

Get Your DAILY Greens

Some people juice their greens or take a green powder because they have a true aversion to eating their green vegetables. That's not me. Broccoli is my favorite vegetable - I don't only crave it, I get excited about eating it just like I get excited about eating brownies. I know this is only one of the many ways that I am not normal, but I'm comfortable with that. At least this is one of those areas where my "lack of normal" is exceptionally helpful to me and my health. Still, with my love of broccoli, kale, spinach, collards, and so many other wonderfully green foods - I know that it's hard to get a truly amazing dose of the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that these greens pack in every single day. That's one of the reasons that Green Vibrance is on my Healthy Essentials list.

What Are The Best Greens To Get And Why?

Gross Food Face - woman with red hair, green shirt.I've tried many greens throughout the years. I've had barely-there greens, swampy-slime greens, "are-you-sure-this-is-green??" greens...you get the idea. I've found greens that were disgusting, but since they were packed with good nutrients, I suffered through them. ("Bitter-beer face" has nothing on my "Oh my word, what was that!?!" greens face.) I've had greens that tasted good, but found that I was paying too much for them. Why? Simple - the lighter taste came with lighter nutrients (fillers made them more palatable and took the space of the nutrients I was trying to get).

I have found a few greens that fit the requirements of being nutrient dense while still having decent flavor. My favorite of all of these greens is Green Vibrance, and here's some of the reasons why:

(Click one of the links above to take you directly to that reason why I choose Green Vibrance.)

Cost of Greens (Relatively)

A Little Over $1 A Day

Before we go into detail of each of the above reasons I take Green Vibrance over any other green, let's deal with the expense. I get a 60 serving container of Green Vibrance from iHerb for around $68 (depends on discount). First, for those looking to try it and are new to iHerb, you can get a $10 discount off of your first order of $40 or more by following this iHerb link or putting in the code tas065 when you order. Next, let's look at why $68 is actually a great deal.

That's a little over $1 a day. A head of lettuce costs about $1 a day and has a great deal less nutrients, but there's more...keep reading.

Saving On Products It Replaces

It replaces other products for me: Food-Based Multi-Vitamin, Probiotics, Prebiotics and More (see More Than Just Greens below for more details). That's a huge reduction in overall cost. Getting more products from one source saves money. If you're looking into greens, then you care about your health. A good food-based multi-vitamin and probiotics are central to your health. Green Vibrance covers those needs as well as many other supplements you may or may not already be taking, but could certainly benefit from.

Coffee vs. Greens - Choices: It's that simple

Where Else Are You Spending It?

Cup of coffee - It's an example that we've all heard or seen applied many times to other things. I hate to be cliché, but it's still true, so it bears pointing out. If you're willing to pay $1 for a cup of coffee (or a snack), shouldn't you be willing to pay around $1 for your health? It really is that simple.

You Genuinely Don't Have The Money

I've had friends that genuinely didn't have the money to pay $1 a day (especially per person when looking to the health of their family). I understood then and I understand now, if that's your situation. I'll tell you what I told her: Buy it and take 1/2 a dose. 1/2 of the serving is still going to do a great deal more for your health than any other product. 1/2 of a nutrient-dense, multi-health formula is still going to do wonders for you and your family. Just because you can't do everything, doesn't mean you can't do anything - remember that!

Just because you can't do everything, doesn't mean you can't do anything -
Remember that!Natasha Renée Hayes

Green Vibrance: Mix of Greens (get a mix of greens in one place)

One of the reasons that I like taking Green Vibrance vs. juicing my greens or taking a simple powdered spirulina is the mix of greens. We all know that different foods have different amounts and spectrums of nutrients. We understand that though a carrot and a clementine are both orange, they're not made up of the same stuff. Sure, they might have some of the same nutrients, but not all of them. This is no difference when looking at sources of greens. That's why I like to mix it up.

Mix your greens with Green Vibrance: spirulina, wheat grass, oat grass, barley grass, kelp, spinach and more.

Green Vibrance takes a collection of greens from different sources (land and sea) and puts them together into one product:

  • Certified organic Barley grass juice powder
  • Certified organic Oat grass juice powder
  • Certified organic Kamut grass juice powder
  • Certified organic Wheat grass juice powder
  • Certified organic Spirulina powder
  • Chlorella (pharmaceutical grade)
  • Certified organic Parsley
  • Certified organic Spinach
  • Certified organic Alfalfa sprout powder
  • Certified organic Broccoli sprout powder
  • Freeze dried Green Bean powder
  • Freeze dried Zucchini powder
  • Certified organic Kelp (sea vegetable)
  • Certified organic Rockweed (sea vegetable)
  • Certified organic Alaria (sea vegetable)

Green Vibrance: More Than Just Greens

I'm always interested in getting more of my needs met in one place - especially when it comes to purchasing products. (I like clothes that can be dressed up or down, a purse that doubles as a briefcase, a cake plate that becomes a punch bowl - Multi-purpose, baby - that's what I like!) Multi-purpose makes things easier to buy, store and travel with, and it usually saves money. All of those apply with Green Vibrance.

Greens Plus Probiotics, Vitamins, Enzymes, Liver Support, Antioxidants and More: Green Vibrance Review at Younger-Body.comGreen Vibrance has more than just greens. It also has:

(Click one of the links above to take you directly to that added nutrient in Green Vibrance.)

Greens Plus Multi-Vitamin Replacement

The first time-saver, money saver and storage saver that Green Vibrance gives me is the multi-vitamin. First, please know that all multi-vitamins are not created equal - it all depends on the source of the vitamins. That's why I always get my vitamins sourced from natural foods.

If you're looking for a multi-vitamin, I can strongly suggest Garden of Life's Raw One Multi-Vitamin for Women, or Garden of Life's Raw One Multi-Vitamin for Men. These are the multi-vitamins we used to take (and still do, depending on our current nutrition, travel and lifestyle needs). When we're at home, or traveling to stay somewhere for an extended period of time, we use the Green Vibrance instead. It gives us all of the vitamins we were getting in the Raw One Multi, with the exception of some B-Vitamins. To make up for this lack, we find it easiest to simply supplement with a good B-Complex. You can get one here.

Feel free to follow this link and compare the breakdown of vitamins for yourself. The breakdown of vitamins in Green Vibrance is below:

  • Vitamin A from beta carotene (4,764 IU)
  • Vitamin C (45.5 mg)

Taste of Greens

If it's disgusting, you're not going to keep drinking it. Taste is important. Green Vibrance is that it doesn't have any off-putting tastes. There's nothing that stands out and it doesn't taste like swamp water (though it does look like it).

Sweet or Salty?

Taste is about more than palatability - it also has to do with flavor. I've had greens that tasted fine because they added stevia, so they were a little sweet. This is great, if you like sweet. If you don't? Good luck.

One of my reader's pointed out that she gets really tired of sweet things and would love to have her greens salty. That's one of the things that I like about Green Vibrance (other than the no disgusting flavors) - they don't add any sweeteners. That gives me control of flavors. If I want it sweet, I add a scoop of Stevia or mix it with a chilled juice or herbal tea. (Yes - it tastes better cold.) If I want it salty, I add salt, maybe even garlic or mix it with a Raw Gazpacho Juice Recipe, or chilled broth. The point is, you control the flavor. Sweet or Salty? Your choice.

Greens: Easy Mixing

Vitamin Shoppe Shaker Bottle

If you've ever had the experience of chewing the chunks in your greens or getting a burst of powder that didn't get blended, you appreciate the importance of a green that mixes well.

I find it easiest to have my greens "shaken, not stirred".  To accomplish that, I use this simple little shaker cup I picked up from Vitamin Shoppe. If you have trouble finding one (I can't find them online), here are a few more options you could pick from. Just click on the image, and it'll take you to it on Amazon.

I particularly like BlenderBottle GoStak Twist n' Lock Storage Jars. You can take your greens and a few servings of protein all to be used in the same bottle! (I told you I like multi-purpose.) For the moms and dads out there, you could even use a sippy cup. Just make sure to take out the filter first, put a finger over the sipping area and wash when done. I certainly don't want to get any of you into trouble with this suggestion. Hey, it's all about using what you have (again with the multi-purpose!).

What About You?

Do you take greens? What do you use? What do you like and dislike about it? Give us tips. Tell us your success stories and your horror stories. We can help each other out...or at least have a good laugh together. Come on...tell me all about it. ;)

Fitness Tools: Nike Studio Wraps

I just LOVE these!
Ok, technically, I love the idea of these as I have yet to get my very own pair…but don't worry, I will.

As a dancer, yoga and Pilates enthusiast, I really appreciate the versatility of these wraps. They have four different ways to wear them, so they're able to change with your needs.

If you're looking for:

  1. Basic protection of the foot while having more control with bare toes,
  2. More support through the arch while having more control with bare toes,
  3. Arch support with a whole slipper that grips, or
  4. Just a flat slipper with minor tread,

You get all of them with the Nike Studio Wrap.

These may just become my favorite shoes!

Nike Studio Wraps for Dance

Nike Studio Wrap Collage

Saying “I'm a dancer” is a bit of a catchall phrase as there are many forms of dance, but I love them all! I've done everything from ballet and jazz to hip-hop and belly dancing. I love ballroom, salsa, modern, ancient and numerous cultural dances I've learned from different countries and villages. Dance is a beautiful expression and interpretation of music and gives an insight to people and culture.

Different dance styles require different shoes for performance, but most forms are practiced with slippers, socked or bare feet (with a few exceptions). Even dances that will have you on pointe or in heels would kill your feet if you practiced in them all of the time. To protect the foot, but still get close to bare feet, there are even footundeez. Check them out!

Nike Studio Wraps are so versatile! They can replace several different dance shoes and be carried in a great little bag. If you're like me, and like to practice several forms of dance, being able to easily build up the support or strip it down to the basics and not have to carry around multiple shoes is the best! No limitations because you don't have the right gear.

Nike Studio Wraps For Yoga

Nike Studio Wraps for YogaYoga is usually performed barefoot, which I love. Still, there are some poses where a little more traction would be nice - especially during Bikram yoga (hot yoga - performed in a room approximately 105 degrees Fahrenheit or 40.6 degrees Celsius).

One of the best things I learned from yoga was the phrase and idea:

“If it's available to you...”

Often yoga instructors say, “If it's available to you today…” followed by some sort of challenge to try the harder pose or movement. I loved this expression and have carried its concept into many areas of my life. The idea is to listen to our bodies and understand that not every day and moment are the same and to work within our true limitations while not allowing false ones to hold us back. What does this have to do with Nike Studio Wraps? Some days, I might need a little more traction. Some days I might feel more comfortable with a little more arch support. Some days, doing that pose barefoot might not be "available to me".

Nike Studio Wraps For Pilates

Pilates is a lot more involved than most people who have “tried it” know. Though I grew up with Calanetics, which is largely based on a modified form of floor and barre-style Pilates, my first exposure to using the Pilates machines was following a major vehicle accident. I was put through several different types of therapies, but working on the Pilates machines were the most effective for my SI and low back. It was amazing!

Pilates push through bar with feet

I remember one exercise in particular where I wish I had a pair of Nike Studio Wraps. It was performed barefoot, because I really needed your feet to grip the bar. Lying down on the trapeze table (Pilates Cadillac), I used my feet to grip the bar, extend it out, bring it back by bending my knees and then re-extending it into the upper position. Here is a video to show you a little of what I was doing (starting around 49 seconds), but I did mine while holding my butt off of the table. All I can say is, it's hard to hold on to that bar with my feet during all of that! I'll take a pair of Nike Studio Wraps please!

Nike Studio Wraps and Barefoot Running

men barefoot running on the beachThanks to much research (and experimentation) by my wonderful husband, Joseph, I have come to appreciate the strengths and limitations of barefoot running. Joseph had flat feet - and I mean flat. He also had a lot of cramping in his feet. Through various exercises and strengthening of the foot, he has raised his arch and significantly reduced pain in his feet. (Details for how he did this will come in another post.)

Some limitations of barefoot running come in especially when making the transition from the normal, extremely supportive and cushioned shoes. People can really hurt themselves. It's like lifting heavy weights for the first time - it's important that build up strength first. Transitioned correctly, there is a lot to be said for training barefoot.

This is one more area where Nike Studio Wraps come in. You can transition and add or take away support as needed. It really allows you to customize your gear (shoes) along with customizing your workout. I will note that this is a "studio" wrap, so the actual wrap portion (without the slipper) should only be used indoors, if you want it to last.

A Closer Look at Nike Studio Wraps

A closer look at Nike Studio WrapsI think that it's so much nicer to be able to look at shoes up close, so here are a few images to let you get a closer look at the wraps, slipper flats and bottom of the Nike Studio Wraps (so you can see the traction).

Also, here's a list of what you should find inside your Nike Studio Wrap box (shown in detail on the video):

  • The Studio Wraps
  • Two Arch Support Ribbon Ties
  • The Slipper Flats
  • Bag to Carry it All

Nike Studio Wraps Give You Options

The little treaded slipper portion could even be worn like the ever-popular ballet flat. So you can wear them in and out - sweating in your workout or out with friends. They come in many different colors too! You can buy different wraps (without the slipper flat) so that you can change it up. I just love these!

The HCG Diet For Skinny-Fat People

...Like Me.

*NOTE* This is a post I wrote while I was going through the HCG Diet Program. I thought I'd share it now to help other skinny-fat people out there. ;)  Summer is approaching - feel empowered with options!

I absolutely LOVE this HCG Diet program!!!

I'll admit, no matter what people tell you, there are the occasional hunger spurts and cravings for forbidden foods. And those times are not easy, but all that's needed to get me through them are the numbers on my scale each morning! I'm not kidding. I've lost an overage of 1/2 lb. a day. That's 3.5 lbs. a week! And here's the REALLY good news - It's all FAT!!! Recordable, measurable, trackable - it's FAT. Maybe if you've never really tried to lose fat, you won't be able to appreciate those numbers. If you have, you know what it means to see that consistent drop - not in just weight, but specifically in FAT!!!

I'm a Skinny-Fat Person

You've probably read about those people who lose 1-2 lbs. a day on this HCG Diet. I've seen it - It's real! It's not at all uncommon for men, in general, or women who are truly overweight. Why am I not getting those numbers? … Easy - I'm not overweight, but I am overFAT. What does this mean? My BMI says, “I'm healthy”. My dress size says, “I'm thin”. My weigh scale says, “No worries”… or at least it would, if it didn't have the ability to measure my Body Fat %. My mirror says, “Cottage cheese, anyone?” (Yeah, for ways to fix that, check out our Cellulite Section.  I'll be adding more detailed information and specific programs to help you: Understand It!  -  Prevent It!  -  Fix It!  -  Fake It 'Till You Make It!)

My Yo-Yo Diet & Exercise Experience

I've spent hours in the gym working to tone my muscles with weighted exercises, and it's worked. Unfortunately, the fat remained. Then I'd cut back my calories to try to “trim up” and I'd LOSE the MUSCLE I'd just worked so hard to get. I suppose you could call that a different form of yo-yo dieting. What I LOVE so much about the HCG Diet is the ability to keep my muscle while losing my fat. Also, I like that I'm seeing my thighs go down vs. my bust. There was nothing more frustrating then losing my muscle AND my breasts all while the fat that had settled in as “saddle bags” wouldn't budge!

I'm Almost There

So, I'm about another week away from reaching my goal. That doesn't sound so hard. I've made it this far and I'm loving what I'm seeing.

PS - Did I mention that my “skinny jeans”, which used to be a second skin, are now loose in all the important areas. They fit, straight out of the dryer, like they used to fit the second or third day. - Yeah, I'm loving it!

***WARNING*** Not every form of hCG being sold is the real thing.  For suppliers of REAL HCG, check out Purchase Real HCG. To understand the difference, and read more about the terrible side effects we had when using the fake hCG, check out HCG - Injections vs. Drops.
