St. Patrick's Day - Wear The Green

Whether you’re representing the Irish, celebrating Ireland’s conversion to Christianity via St. Patrick, or simply avoiding getting pinched, there are several ways to “Wear The Green” on St. Patrick’s Day.

Still, there is more in traditions than just wearing green. In 1681, an English traveler by the name of Thomas Dinely noted a seires of St. Patrick's Day practices:

“the Irish wore Celtic crosses, had green ribbon in their hats, pinned shamrock to their clothes” Tomas Dineley, 1681

Let me introduce you to the many ways you can represent Ireland and celebrate all that St. Patrick's Day represents.

Many Ways To "Wear The Green"

Wearing The Shamrock

Felt shamrock for bootsThe shamrock is iconic for Ireland. Many associate it with the “Luck of the Irish”, but it is said to have been used to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish.

“In his teachings, St Patrick commonly referred to the Holy Trinity, and it is claim that he used the humble shamrock, a plant that had always grown freely across Ireland, to illustrate the symmetry of the Trinity.” The Wearing of the Green: A History of St Patrick's Day
“[Shamrock] is worn by people in their hats on the 17th day of March yearly, which is called St. Patrick's Day, it being a current tradition that, by this three-leaved grass, he emblematically set forth to them the mystery of the Holy Trinity.” Caleb Threlkeld, 1727

'Wetting' or 'Drowning' of the Shamrock

Wetting the shamrockOne interesting tradition involving the shamrock is the wetting of the shamrock.

"At the close of the festive day, the piece of shamrock, which had resided opon the wearer's clothing, was placed in the bottom of a glass or cup, then covered with punch, whiskey, or any other available alcohol. The Wearing of the Green: A History of St Patrick's Day

I'm sure it doesn't go without notice that there is often a lot of drinking involved with the revelry of the St Patrick's Day feast. This is, in large part, due to St. Patrick's Day falling within Lent (the Lenton abstinence period where Catholics are to refrain from such things). This "blessed" feast allows a one day reprieve from Lent, and thereby...a lot of indulgence.

For those looking to "wear the green" by wearing a shamrock, here are some great options that will survive through multiple celebrations...whether you choose to follow the "wetting of the shamrock" or not. (Click on the images below to view or purchase these products via Amazon.)

The Celtic Cross

The Celtic Cross is an iconic symbol of St. Patrick's Day. It is a cross with a circle that is often accompanied with the celtic knot or the trinity symbol.

“It is believed that St. Patrick combined the symbol of Christianity with the sun cross, to give pagan followers an idea of the importance of the cross by linking it with the idea of the life-giving properties of the sun.” Irish Blessings. (2014). The legend of the Celtic cross
"It has often been claimed that Patrick combined the symbol of Christianity with the sun cross...placing the cross on top of the circle represents Christ's supremacy over the pagan sun." Wikipedia - The Celtic Cross

St. Patrick's Day Hairstyles

Green Hair Chalk

One simple and fun way to "wear the green" is to put it in your hair...and we're not just talking ribbons here (though those are nice too). Why not try out some green hair chalk this year? There are several different types and shades available. One nice thing about hair chalk vs. sprays is that you can pick out some individual strands and mix up the look. I especially like this when working with curls! Coloring individual curls makes it "pop" without looking like stripes. This also works if you're doing any sort of updo or partial updo...which brings us to some fun tutorials for St. Patrick's Day Updos!

3 Ways to Wear a Celtic Knot

This is a great step-by-step tutorial with close ups of how to create the Celtic knot hairstyle three different ways. There's the Celtic knot half updo, the double Celtic knot, and the side Celtic knot. This gives you a good foundation to come up with your own creations as well.

How to: Celtic Knot Half Updo and Ponytail!

I love the Celtic knot ponytail - it's such a clasy, finished look. Though the video above gives slower step-by-step instructions, this tutorial shows how to do the hairstyle on yourself, using a Bobby pin to hold the loop.

3 Leaf Clover: Shamrock Hairstyle Tutorial

This video shows you how to do a shamrock hairstyle. With a few twists and hair ties, you can create your own St. Patrick's Day Shamrock updo. Add a little green and gold ribbon to finish off the look. You can also braid the three areas instead of twisting them, as that might be easier when working with only two hands.

St. Patrick's Day Green Eyeshadow Tutorials

It's always fun to have an excuse for a little more drama around the eyes and what better time to try out different styles and shades of green!

Smokey Emerald Green Eye Makeup Tutorial

As the name suggests, this is a darker, smokey look with some glittering feel to it. I like this one better for evening, but with the right outfit, you could definitely rock it in the daytime.

St. Patrick's Day Nails

How To Do Water Marble Nails

This is a super simple tutorial that shows how easy it is to do water marble nail designs. She doesn't have any special nail tools. All you will need is the following:

  • Masking tape (or almost any tape will do)
  • Q-tips
  • Toothpick
  • Water (room temperature)
  • Set of nail polish colors you desire to use (at least 2 different colors)
  • Clear coat nail polish to finish.

DIY Nail Tools

How To Add Dots To Nails

Next, you can add the dots in any design you like. As each nail will turn out a little differently from the water marbling, you can perfect the look on each nail. See the image below and how the dotting on each nail was different according to what was needed to give a finished look to the marbling.

Though there professional tools available, you also have simple tools sitting around the house that can be used for various sizes of dots:

  • Toothpick
  • Ball point pen
  • Push pin
  • Bobby pin
  • Eraser

*NOTE - If you don't wait for the water marble nail polish to completely dry, then the dots will pick up some of their pigment. This can be a great effect or a disaster, depending on your goal. Experiment and have fun!

Before and After: Nail Dotting and Water Marble

Quick Clothing Ideas for St. Patrick's Day

Though you can certainly go with the classic "Kiss Me I'm Irish" T-shirt...or it's counterpart "I'm not Irish - Kiss Me Anyway"...or even "Kiss Me I'm Pretending To Be Irish"...

...Some of you might be looking for something a little less direct. With that in mind, here are some great options:

  • Green Scarfs
  • Green Hats
  • Shamrock Laces
  • Shamrock Button Covers
  • (Click on the images below to view or purchase these products via Amazon.)

Healthy Essentials: Green Vibrance

Green Vibrance by Vibrant Health - 60 serving containerWe all know that greens are good for us - to eat, juice, take intravenously - ok, that last one is taking it a bit far, but you get the idea. Greens are good for you. You need them, so get them.

One of the powerhouse ways that I like to get my greens (& soooo many other healthy essentials, like enzymes, probiotics, liver support, etc.) is with Green Vibrance from Vibrant Health.

Get Your DAILY Greens

Some people juice their greens or take a green powder because they have a true aversion to eating their green vegetables. That's not me. Broccoli is my favorite vegetable - I don't only crave it, I get excited about eating it just like I get excited about eating brownies. I know this is only one of the many ways that I am not normal, but I'm comfortable with that. At least this is one of those areas where my "lack of normal" is exceptionally helpful to me and my health. Still, with my love of broccoli, kale, spinach, collards, and so many other wonderfully green foods - I know that it's hard to get a truly amazing dose of the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that these greens pack in every single day. That's one of the reasons that Green Vibrance is on my Healthy Essentials list.

What Are The Best Greens To Get And Why?

Gross Food Face - woman with red hair, green shirt.I've tried many greens throughout the years. I've had barely-there greens, swampy-slime greens, "are-you-sure-this-is-green??" greens...you get the idea. I've found greens that were disgusting, but since they were packed with good nutrients, I suffered through them. ("Bitter-beer face" has nothing on my "Oh my word, what was that!?!" greens face.) I've had greens that tasted good, but found that I was paying too much for them. Why? Simple - the lighter taste came with lighter nutrients (fillers made them more palatable and took the space of the nutrients I was trying to get).

I have found a few greens that fit the requirements of being nutrient dense while still having decent flavor. My favorite of all of these greens is Green Vibrance, and here's some of the reasons why:

(Click one of the links above to take you directly to that reason why I choose Green Vibrance.)

Cost of Greens (Relatively)

A Little Over $1 A Day

Before we go into detail of each of the above reasons I take Green Vibrance over any other green, let's deal with the expense. I get a 60 serving container of Green Vibrance from iHerb for around $68 (depends on discount). First, for those looking to try it and are new to iHerb, you can get a $10 discount off of your first order of $40 or more by following this iHerb link or putting in the code tas065 when you order. Next, let's look at why $68 is actually a great deal.

That's a little over $1 a day. A head of lettuce costs about $1 a day and has a great deal less nutrients, but there's more...keep reading.

Saving On Products It Replaces

It replaces other products for me: Food-Based Multi-Vitamin, Probiotics, Prebiotics and More (see More Than Just Greens below for more details). That's a huge reduction in overall cost. Getting more products from one source saves money. If you're looking into greens, then you care about your health. A good food-based multi-vitamin and probiotics are central to your health. Green Vibrance covers those needs as well as many other supplements you may or may not already be taking, but could certainly benefit from.

Coffee vs. Greens - Choices: It's that simple

Where Else Are You Spending It?

Cup of coffee - It's an example that we've all heard or seen applied many times to other things. I hate to be cliché, but it's still true, so it bears pointing out. If you're willing to pay $1 for a cup of coffee (or a snack), shouldn't you be willing to pay around $1 for your health? It really is that simple.

You Genuinely Don't Have The Money

I've had friends that genuinely didn't have the money to pay $1 a day (especially per person when looking to the health of their family). I understood then and I understand now, if that's your situation. I'll tell you what I told her: Buy it and take 1/2 a dose. 1/2 of the serving is still going to do a great deal more for your health than any other product. 1/2 of a nutrient-dense, multi-health formula is still going to do wonders for you and your family. Just because you can't do everything, doesn't mean you can't do anything - remember that!

Just because you can't do everything, doesn't mean you can't do anything -
Remember that!Natasha Renée Hayes

Green Vibrance: Mix of Greens (get a mix of greens in one place)

One of the reasons that I like taking Green Vibrance vs. juicing my greens or taking a simple powdered spirulina is the mix of greens. We all know that different foods have different amounts and spectrums of nutrients. We understand that though a carrot and a clementine are both orange, they're not made up of the same stuff. Sure, they might have some of the same nutrients, but not all of them. This is no difference when looking at sources of greens. That's why I like to mix it up.

Mix your greens with Green Vibrance: spirulina, wheat grass, oat grass, barley grass, kelp, spinach and more.

Green Vibrance takes a collection of greens from different sources (land and sea) and puts them together into one product:

  • Certified organic Barley grass juice powder
  • Certified organic Oat grass juice powder
  • Certified organic Kamut grass juice powder
  • Certified organic Wheat grass juice powder
  • Certified organic Spirulina powder
  • Chlorella (pharmaceutical grade)
  • Certified organic Parsley
  • Certified organic Spinach
  • Certified organic Alfalfa sprout powder
  • Certified organic Broccoli sprout powder
  • Freeze dried Green Bean powder
  • Freeze dried Zucchini powder
  • Certified organic Kelp (sea vegetable)
  • Certified organic Rockweed (sea vegetable)
  • Certified organic Alaria (sea vegetable)

Green Vibrance: More Than Just Greens

I'm always interested in getting more of my needs met in one place - especially when it comes to purchasing products. (I like clothes that can be dressed up or down, a purse that doubles as a briefcase, a cake plate that becomes a punch bowl - Multi-purpose, baby - that's what I like!) Multi-purpose makes things easier to buy, store and travel with, and it usually saves money. All of those apply with Green Vibrance.

Greens Plus Probiotics, Vitamins, Enzymes, Liver Support, Antioxidants and More: Green Vibrance Review at Younger-Body.comGreen Vibrance has more than just greens. It also has:

(Click one of the links above to take you directly to that added nutrient in Green Vibrance.)

Greens Plus Multi-Vitamin Replacement

The first time-saver, money saver and storage saver that Green Vibrance gives me is the multi-vitamin. First, please know that all multi-vitamins are not created equal - it all depends on the source of the vitamins. That's why I always get my vitamins sourced from natural foods.

If you're looking for a multi-vitamin, I can strongly suggest Garden of Life's Raw One Multi-Vitamin for Women, or Garden of Life's Raw One Multi-Vitamin for Men. These are the multi-vitamins we used to take (and still do, depending on our current nutrition, travel and lifestyle needs). When we're at home, or traveling to stay somewhere for an extended period of time, we use the Green Vibrance instead. It gives us all of the vitamins we were getting in the Raw One Multi, with the exception of some B-Vitamins. To make up for this lack, we find it easiest to simply supplement with a good B-Complex. You can get one here.

Feel free to follow this link and compare the breakdown of vitamins for yourself. The breakdown of vitamins in Green Vibrance is below:

  • Vitamin A from beta carotene (4,764 IU)

Taste of Greens

If it's disgusting, you're not going to keep drinking it. Taste is important. Green Vibrance is that it doesn't have any off-putting tastes. There's nothing that stands out and it doesn't taste like swamp water (though it does look like it).

Sweet or Salty?

Taste is about more than palatability - it also has to do with flavor. I've had greens that tasted fine because they added stevia, so they were a little sweet. This is great, if you like sweet. If you don't? Good luck.

One of my reader's pointed out that she gets really tired of sweet things and would love to have her greens salty. That's one of the things that I like about Green Vibrance (other than the no disgusting flavors) - they don't add any sweeteners. That gives me control of flavors. If I want it sweet, I add a scoop of Stevia or mix it with a chilled juice or herbal tea. (Yes - it tastes better cold.) If I want it salty, I add salt, maybe even garlic or mix it with a Raw Gazpacho Juice Recipe, or chilled broth. The point is, you control the flavor. Sweet or Salty? Your choice.

Greens: Easy Mixing

Vitamin Shoppe Shaker Bottle

If you've ever had the experience of chewing the chunks in your greens or getting a burst of powder that didn't get blended, you appreciate the importance of a green that mixes well.

I find it easiest to have my greens "shaken, not stirred".  To accomplish that, I use this simple little shaker cup I picked up from Vitamin Shoppe. If you have trouble finding one (I can't find them online), here are a few more options you could pick from. Just click on the image, and it'll take you to it on Amazon.

I particularly like BlenderBottle GoStak Twist n' Lock Storage Jars. You can take your greens and a few servings of protein all to be used in the same bottle! (I told you I like multi-purpose.) For the moms and dads out there, you could even use a sippy cup. Just make sure to take out the filter first, put a finger over the sipping area and wash when done. I certainly don't want to get any of you into trouble with this suggestion. Hey, it's all about using what you have (again with the multi-purpose!).

What About You?

Do you take greens? What do you use? What do you like and dislike about it? Give us tips. Tell us your success stories and your horror stories. We can help each other out...or at least have a good laugh together. Come on...tell me all about it. ;)

The HCG Diet For Skinny-Fat People

...Like Me.

*NOTE* This is a post I wrote while I was going through the HCG Diet Program. I thought I'd share it now to help other skinny-fat people out there. ;)  Summer is approaching - feel empowered with options!

I absolutely LOVE this HCG Diet program!!!

I'll admit, no matter what people tell you, there are the occasional hunger spurts and cravings for forbidden foods. And those times are not easy, but all that's needed to get me through them are the numbers on my scale each morning! I'm not kidding. I've lost an overage of 1/2 lb. a day. That's 3.5 lbs. a week! And here's the REALLY good news - It's all FAT!!! Recordable, measurable, trackable - it's FAT. Maybe if you've never really tried to lose fat, you won't be able to appreciate those numbers. If you have, you know what it means to see that consistent drop - not in just weight, but specifically in FAT!!!

I'm a Skinny-Fat Person

You've probably read about those people who lose 1-2 lbs. a day on this HCG Diet. I've seen it - It's real! It's not at all uncommon for men, in general, or women who are truly overweight. Why am I not getting those numbers? … Easy - I'm not overweight, but I am overFAT. What does this mean? My BMI says, “I'm healthy”. My dress size says, “I'm thin”. My weigh scale says, “No worries”… or at least it would, if it didn't have the ability to measure my Body Fat %. My mirror says, “Cottage cheese, anyone?” (Yeah, for ways to fix that, check out our Cellulite Section.  I'll be adding more detailed information and specific programs to help you: Understand It!  -  Prevent It!  -  Fix It!  -  Fake It 'Till You Make It!)

My Yo-Yo Diet & Exercise Experience

I've spent hours in the gym working to tone my muscles with weighted exercises, and it's worked. Unfortunately, the fat remained. Then I'd cut back my calories to try to “trim up” and I'd LOSE the MUSCLE I'd just worked so hard to get. I suppose you could call that a different form of yo-yo dieting. What I LOVE so much about the HCG Diet is the ability to keep my muscle while losing my fat. Also, I like that I'm seeing my thighs go down vs. my bust. There was nothing more frustrating then losing my muscle AND my breasts all while the fat that had settled in as “saddle bags” wouldn't budge!

I'm Almost There

So, I'm about another week away from reaching my goal. That doesn't sound so hard. I've made it this far and I'm loving what I'm seeing.

PS - Did I mention that my “skinny jeans”, which used to be a second skin, are now loose in all the important areas. They fit, straight out of the dryer, like they used to fit the second or third day. - Yeah, I'm loving it!

***WARNING*** Not every form of hCG being sold is the real thing.  For suppliers of REAL HCG, check out Purchase Real HCG. To understand the difference, and read more about the terrible side effects we had when using the fake hCG, check out HCG - Injections vs. Drops.
